“All things are lawful, but not all things are helpful. All things are lawful, but not all things build up.”

A new month begins,

and it is easy to rush in with the energy of “I can do anything.”

We want to accomplish, to break through, to seize opportunities—

as if the month’s value depends entirely on how much we do.

But Paul reminds us:

ability does not equal benefit,

freedom does not equal edification.

The world teaches us to measure by numbers, results, efficiency.

God teaches us to measure by heart, meaning, and life impact.

Just because something is possible does not mean it should be done.

Some choices, though permissible, bring no real benefit to you or others;

some freedoms, though available, do not build life.

At the start of a new month, pause and ask:

“Do the things I choose today build myself and others?”

“Am I acting to reflect God’s wisdom,

or just to prove that I can act?”

The boundary of freedom and ability

becomes clear here.

You do not need to act simply because you can,

nor pursue everything just because it is possible.

A life that edifies

is rarely loud or dramatic.

It comes from each conscious, honest choice

that carries real life impact.

Remember: ability and freedom are tools.

Benefit and edification are the direction.

Focus first on direction,

and the actions will naturally follow.

Prayer

Lord,

As a new month begins, my heart is easily drawn

to busyness and possibilities.

Help me discern:

Which things are truly beneficial?

Which choices build up myself and those around me?

Teach me to act with wisdom, not impulse,

to exercise freedom without being led astray,

so that each day’s actions carry life and meaning.

Amen.

Reflection

• Are the things I most want to do today truly beneficial to myself or others?

• Do I often act simply because I can, without considering meaning?

Today’s Practice

Today, choose three things you can do and want to do.

Before acting, ask:

“Does this benefit? Does this build up?”

Pause, act consciously,

and let meaning accompany every choice.
